Fossicking for hidden treasure!

The next planned holiday on the agenda are the thriving regional centres of Biloela and Emerald. To give us that perfect country get-away an overnight stay on a genuine cattle station is a must! The following day we will head further west to the Sapphire Gemfields where we will enjoy the experience of fossicking for sapphires. This area is famed for cattle-rearing and home to some of the state's largest cattle stations. It's also mining country, from the former gold workings of Mt Morgan to the mighty open cut coal fields near Moura. The drive out west should be a memorable experience. It is 4WD country and therefore the rental of an off-road vehicle will be a must on this trip!



This trip promises all the excitement of a by-gone era of gold mining, fossicking and cattle driving with all the luxury and modern conveniences of today.

Beautiful sunny Rockhampton, Queensland

During the last school holidays I packed up the family and travelled by Tilt Train up to the Tropic of Capricorn. We packed our swimsuits, walking gear and set out to discover the Capricorn region. We based ourselves in the modest town of Rockhampton in a very friendly and cost effective holiday village. We explored this great region by rental car and discovered some of the most beautiful places of this region. Rockhampton is the region’s largest city and fondly known as "Australia’s Beef Capital". Due to our time restrictions we ventured north of Rockhampton only to Yeppoon. This part was a bit disappointing due to the lack of sandy beaches - at the time of our visit it was high tide and the beaches were left a bit messy from a storm which happened a few weeks before.
We explored the awesome Capricorn Caves, and took a tour of Bat Cleft. On the way home we stopped at the Crocodile Farm and got to see some excellent and scary Crocodile handling.
Our next trip is planned in June and we will be spending a little time fossicking in the Sapphire Gemfields, the largest in the southern hemisphere.
